Introduction:
We guess can what effect this will have on universities in general and on landscape architecture departments in particular – but what can we do about it? LE:NOTRE allows you to add value while surviving cutbacks – it even works without ‘efficiency savings’ Details: We are already aware of the financial problems in Greece, Portugal, Spain and Ireland, not to mention Iceland, but big cutbacks are coming in the so-called ‘rich’ countries too: “Berlin poised for €10bn yearly cuts” – Financial Times 23. May 2010; “Coalition reveals £6.2bn UK budget cuts ” – Financial Times 24. May 2010… and there is more to come. Will universities be spared? In Austria we already know the answer – a funding freeze for universities over the coming years, which of course amounts to a reduction in resources in real terms. Many other countries will probably fare far worse, with real cutbacks already implemented or on the way. But we knew it was coming* –the question is: what have we done to prepare for the situation and how should we react to it now? “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat...” as Winston Churchill once said - what he did not add was: "...and the chance to generate added value through your toil". But how? By cooperation and sharing at the European and indeed international scale – LE:NOTRE makes this possible. It means, among other things, taking the opportunity to contribute to develop high quality common resources by creating and sharing information via the LE:NOTRE web site.
