The following people have received awards under the different categories in 2014:
LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2014
Professor Dr Karsten Jørgensen of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences was unanimously nominated by the ECLAS executive Committee in recognition of his outstanding service to ECLAS, to the Journal of Landscape Architecture and to the discipline of landscape architecture generally.
Early in his career Karsten was employed as a research assistant at the Institute for Landscape Planning from 1983 to 1989 and from 1989 to 1994 he was an associate professor, and since 1994 he has been professor at the department. He was Head of Section landscape architecture from 1996 to 2007. He sits on the boards of the Norwegian Museum of Architecture and the Norwegian Form Foundation. In 1993-1994 he was a visiting professor at the Estonian Agricultural University in Tartu and Latvia University of Agriculture in Jelgava, contributing to the establishment of the study of landscape architecture in those countries following the fall of communism. In 1996 he was a visiting professor at the Technion in Haifa in Israel. Between 1997-2007 he led a joint project with Birzeit University in the West Bank, Palestine and thereby contributed to the creation of landscape education in Palestine.
Karsten Jørgensen’s research interests include the theory and history of landscape architecture, and he has worked in connection with conservation projects in Norwegian garden art, including Bygdøy Royal Estate in Oslo.
It is for his service to ECLAS that we honour him today – he was on the executive committee since the founding of ECLAS in 1990 – so he has served for 24 years! In addition Karsten was a founder and first managing editor of JoLA, our Journal of Landscape Architecture one of the outstanding achievements of ECLAS. He helped to steer the journal in the transfer of publisher from Callwey to Routledge and the inauguration of three issues per year from this year. Karsten is leaving the EC and is withdrawing from JoLA once the new editors have found their feet.
Professor Dr Krystyna Dąbrowska-Budziło was nominated by faculty members of the Cracow University of Technology, Institute for Landscape Architecture, Poland. She is a senior member of the academic staff and has made significant contributions to the development of her school; A Full Professor since 2007 she has been an academic staff member in the department for 45 years (since 1968).
Professor Dąbrowska-Budziło is among those who are and have been instrumental for landscape architecture to become an academically and professionally respected field in Poland. She is member and on the board of the Section of Landscape Architecture at the Committee of Urbanism and Architecture at the Polish Academy of Sciences. To this day she brings visibility to landscape architecture in Poland and beyond and she also contributes significantly to the academic development of landscape architecture by working on PhD commissions and by leading and supervising research. She received the Brown Cross of Merit (2006) and was awarded by the Polish President with the Golden Medal for Lifetime Service in higher education (2009), and she was also honoured by the Cracow University of Technology in recognition of her research quality (1991).
With her teaching and research Professor Dąbrowska-Budziło is and has been inspiring academics, professional and students for many years. She has guided uncounted numbers of students who were then able to develop projects of outstanding quality, including designs for public open space, historic cities and heritage landscapes. She has published more than 50 journal articles, several book chapters and 3 books (in Polish, English and Italian), many of which now belong to the core of landscape architecture writing in Poland. For her book she received prestigious awards.
In professional practice, ProfessorDąbrowska-Budziło has contributed to over 50 landscape and urban planning and design projects. For some of them she received prestigious awards.
OUTSTANDING RESEARCHER AWARD 2014
Professor Catharine J. Ward Thompson, PhD, WAS nominated Edinburgh School of Architecture and landscape Architecture, University of Edinburgh.
Catharine Ward Thompson is Associate Dean of Research, Knowledge Exchange and Impact in the College of Humanities and Social Science (CHSS), in the University of Edinburgh. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2007, and a Fellow of Chartered Landscape Institute since 1999.
Catharine is the world-renowned head of the OPENspace Research Centre which she founded in 2001, doing research herself and coordinating research within the centre as well as building up the centre to be one of the premier research centres in landscape within Europe and the world. From this position she acts as policy advisor with access to several national and regional government departments. The centre’s research findings are also disseminated in academic publications and books, of which she has an impressively long list.
Catherine is and has been first supervisor for over 20 doctoral students, and she has an extensive list of Principal Research Grants and Scholarships. Her contributions to the body of knowledge in landscape architecture are huge. Her international service as external examiner is well known, as also is her extensive service on External Committees / Professional Appointments, nationally and internationally. She is also noted in “Awards and Prizes” that give both professional and public recognition of services, national and international. This argues for leadership in landscape architecture research, high quality of research methods, etc. Catharine was also on the ECLAS/LE:NOTRE steering committee in the early phases of the LE:NOTRE PROJECT.
OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR AWARD 2014
Assoc. Professor Angelica Stan, PhD, was nominated by members of Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urban Planning, Bucharest, Romania.
Angelica Stan has been a member of staff since 2004 and also an active teacher with the Urban and Landscape Design Department since 1999. As an assistant, lecturer and now associate professor, she has continuously been active in furthering the fields of planning and landscape architecture in a country recovering from decades of appalling urban planning and the ruination of large parts of the landscape.
Her creativity in advising students and in her own planning and design is evidenced by continuous pedagogic education, and by her portfolio which also indicates how she aims to tailor educational approaches to the discipline of landscape architecture.
Her contribution of teaching has motivated and inspired her students Through her publications and lectures Angelica Stan has established herself, in her country, as an educator in ways which enhance the knowledge and skills necessary for good landscape architecture education and, through this, to practice.
OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARD: THRID CYCLE, DOCTORAL
Wiebke Klemm was nominated by members of the Landscape Architecture Group of Wageningen University & Research Centre, the Netherlands.
Wiebke is currently working in the 4th year of her doctoral research on the relation of green infrastructure and urban heat problems. This research she is conducting in an interdisciplinary scientific environment: the Dutch research consortium ‘Knowledge for Climate – climate-proof cities’. Her work has been recognized as highly advanced and excellent by the highest research organization of the Netherlands.
One of the several strengths of this nominee is her substantial research output and publications, which include a number of papers and, in addition, several conference papers and posters.
Wiebke has also tutored several 1st and 2nd cycle thesis students thus providing an example to younger students on the role of landscape architects in contributing substantially to research and to the topic of urban climate adaptation in particular.
She has also been active in disseminating knowledge and understanding of her research findings through guest lectures, including those where she addresses the professional public. She gave workshops about climate responsive design and urban planning for professionals.
Wiebke has worked and practiced as a landscape architect for several years. She contributed to designs winning in international competition. Wiebke has also contributed much to enhance public awareness of the role of landscape architects in and to scientific research, including her several appearances in public media (such as film/video and interviews, national and regional TV, interviews in national newspapers).
OUTSTANDING STUDENT AWARD: SECOND CYCLE (MASTER)
Gašper Habjanič has been nominated by members of Department of Landscape Architecture in the Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Gašper has been enrolled in the Master of Landscape Architecture programme of that department. He also took part in an Erasmus exchange programme with the Technical University of Munich.
Gašper has received two scholarships and several awards for his landscape architecture work, including one at 7th European Biennial of Landscape Architecture, and the “outstanding student achievement” in 2012. He is innovative in several facets of landscape architecture, his projects providing an example for current and future landscape architecture students.
Gašper provides services beyond being a student; he was a long standing member of the student council of the Biotechnical faculty, University of Ljubljana (2008 – 2009 Vice-president) and national representative for Slovenia in the European Landscape Architecture Student Association (ELASA). He was the lead organizer of the 2011 ELASA Meeting in Slovenia, thereby setting an example for organizing international landscape architecture meetings.
