Landscape architecture, especially sustainable landscape planning

Landscape architecture combines artistic, scientific and technical expertise. It is an internationally important discipline and a growing profession in Finland; its scope has recently diversified and increased significantly. Aalto University is Finland’s only academic institute in the field of landscape architecture. The degree programme is currently divided into three study areas: 1) landscape design and construction, 2) landscape planning and management, 3) urban planning and design (shared with the Degree Programme of Architecture). Due to the transversal character of the Department of Architecture, of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture and of Aalto University, the Landscape Architecture degree programme combines and promotes specific education and multidisciplinary interactions with other disciplines like Architecture, Arts, Design, Planning and Engineering disciplines.

Job description

The position is to be filled at the Assistant professor level of Aalto University tenure track system. The position is full-time and for a fixed term of 3-5 years.

The focus of this academic position is on creating new knowledge and on developing expertise in landscape planning questions related to the sustainable evolution of various landscapes including natural, transformed and urbanized environments. Integrating landscape ecology into urban and regional planning, strategic planning and environmental administration is in the core area of the professorship.

The tasks of the Professor of Landscape architecture include research and teaching in the field described above as well as development and administrative work within the department. The professor will work in cooperation with other teaching staff of the department, especially with other professors and with other departments of the university.

Throughout their careers, those in the academic tenure track system are expected to instigate and guide artistic and/or scientific research, to provide related higher academic education, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field.

Requirements

The applicants are expected to have a master’s degree in landscape architecture or in a closely related discipline. A doctoral degree will be considered an advantage.

Applicants are expected to possess appropriate research and/or artistic merits as well as professional competence. The evaluation of candidates is based on the level of accomplishment and merits gained through research and/or artistic work and professional practice, teaching, academic leadership and other relevant activity in academic and professional communities. The successful candidate is expected to be internationally networked and fluent in English.

Familiarity with the potential and challenges of the northern cultural and environmental context will be considered an advantage. Similarly, experience and interaction with other technical and artistic fields, as well as knowledge and understanding of design/planning and production processes are appreciated.

Evaluation at the Assistant Professor level follows the Tenure track system of Aalto University and is mainly based on research or/and artistic merits as well as the applicant’s potential to reach world class in their field.

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also propose their own salary requirements.
