UNSW Built Environment (UNSW BE) is one of the largest built environment faculties in Australia and is internationally renowned for its comprehensive range of degree programs. UNSW BE focus is on research and education relevant to the planning, design and development of the 21st century city.
UNSW Built Environment is introducing a Master of Landscape Architecture degree program in 2018. This new program builds on the strengths of the existing undergraduate Landscape Architecture program in design thinking, urban landscape design and people/place studies to expand and intensify the focus on constructed ecologies and landscape systems and performance. The new UNSW MLArch complements UNSW BE post-graduate programs in Architecture, City Planning, City Analytics and Construction Project Management and is structured to optimise research and learning across the Faculty’s interdisciplinary expertise in urban analytics, high performance design, urban resilience and social agency.
We are seeking a Professor or Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture, an outstanding and aspirational scholar, capable of realising the strategic priorities of Landscape Architecture at UNSW BE. The position is focused on sustaining academic excellence in the areas of landscape performance, constructed ecologies, landscape systems, or closely related areas of research. The role is for an agile and experienced academic, with qualifications in landscape architecture and a high calibre research portfolio that includes interdisciplinary engagement in one or more the faculty’s area of expertise: urban science, high performance design, urban resilience, and social agency.
This is a new position which reports to the Discipline Director for Landscape Architecture at UNSW BE.

It is expected that the appointee will provide a significant contribution to the discipline and deliver satisfactory performance and leadership. Specific performance expectations will be set individually with the Supervisor.
About the successful applicant
You will be expected to provide academic leadership and make significant contributions to teaching, scholarship, research, professional and administrative duties in the Faculty of Built Environment (and School). The role has primary responsibility for teaching and conducting research related to Landscape Architecture with the objective of ensuring that the Faculty of Built Environment is recognised by grant funders, employers and students as the leading Australian school in this area.
To be successful in this role you will:
The specific duties of the Associate Professor in Landscape Architecture include (but are not limited to):
- Deliver high quality teaching and student experience utilising sound pedagogical methodologies and innovative technologies and from time to time, deliver teaching across disciplines
- Conduct research of high quality and high international impact including attainment of competitive government and industry research funding and publication of outcomes in high quality research outlets
- Play a significant role in the leadership of research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research team
- High quality supervision of postgraduate research projects
- Provide leadership in developing significant productive relationships and engagement with industry and the community, attract significant industry funding and participate in professional activities
- Work collaboratively with peers across the Faculty and UNSW in all aspects of academic endeavour and contribute to mentoring of other staff
- High level contribution to broad administrative functions in the School and/or University, course coordination, attending departmental and/or faculty meetings, involvement in Open days and recruitment activities and play a major role in planning and/or committee work or other duties as requested by the Director of Landscape Architecture and/or the Head of School
- Provide a significant contribution to the profession and discipline through engagement in academic administration and service to the wider academic and professional community,
- Ensure hazards and risks are identified and controlled for tasks, projects and activities that pose a health and safety risk within your area of responsibility
Selection Criteria
- A distinguished record of scholarship and academic leadership: demonstrated ability to lead teams of academic staff to high performance in research, teaching and/or engagement;
- A distinguished research record: demonstrated ability overtime to attract research funding and a record of high-level of publication in quality outlets. A Phd is a preferred credential.
- A record of excellence in teaching and supervision: demonstrated skill and ability to deliver high quality learning and teaching experiences, evidence of innovation in teaching, and substantial experience in the supervision of postgraduate research students
- A record of achievement in academic administration in a tertiary institution: the knowledge and ability to engage with the administrative requirements of a major research university operating in an international context;
- A strong record of successful interaction with external organisations: demonstrated ability to build and sustain productive relationships with external organisations and design firms.
- Demonstrated positive and constructive engagement with matters and policy relating to equity and diversity
- Knowledge of OHS responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant OHS training
