Clemson University invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the School of Architecture. The School of Architecture (SoA) is situated within the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities (CAAH) which offers a rich environment for creative initiatives and interdisciplinary collaborations. The SoA offers liberal arts and professional education driven by research and academic inquiry enriched by multidisciplinary research and discovery in a top-25 public university with a reputation for excellence worldwide. As the only architecture school in the state, the SoA prepares students to be innovative and world-changing professionals. The school promotes leadership, collaboration and public service at the intersection of design and technology in a student-centered community.
The Director serves as the administrative leader of a multidisciplinary School including Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Historic Preservation and Resilient Urban Design. With approximately 550 student majors, 70- plus faculty and staff, 13 degree and certificate programs, across four locations the school’s total expenditures last year were over $10,000,000. The SoA offers an opportunity to have a substantial voice in the growth and development of education across undergraduate, masters and doctoral programs. The Director will offer leadership to support the ongoing mission of excellence in teaching, public service and research for allied disciplines engaged in addressing the significant challenges facing the built environments of the 21st century. This is a 12-month position. The school receives considerable support from state professionals and the SC Board of Architecture, as well as from a large body of loyal alumni and friends.
The Director is responsible for maintaining a high profile in the professional communities and promoting the school. The School houses strong academic and professional programs with architecture and landscape architecture programs receiving NAAB and LAAB accreditation for the maximum number of years. The next accreditation is scheduled for 2025. Named one of “America’s Best Architecture and Design Schools” by DesignIntelligence for the seventh consecutive year, the Master of Architecture ranks as one of the top 10 accredited architecture graduate programs at a public university. The DesignIntelligence annual survey ranks the Master of Architecture and Bachelor of Landscape Architecture as two of the “Most Admired” programs in the country at a private or public institution.
The School is hosted across a Fluid Campus comprised of the main campus in Clemson, South Carolina and Centers in Charleston, South Carolina; Genoa, Italy; and Barcelona, Spain. This provides a unique framework for faculty and students to work in diverse physical, political and cultural settings where each location provides distinct pedagogical and research opportunities. The Center for Health Facilities Design and Testing, the Center for Community Research plus Design Center, and CU’s Institute for Intelligent Materials, Systems, and Environments are led by endowed faculty and administered by the school. Overall the school has two endowed chairs and two named professorships. The Clemson Architectural Foundation (CAF) provides funding for the Daniel Center in Genoa and for the enrichment of all the professional programs in the College. Allied disciplines within CAAH offer degrees in City Planning and Real Estate Development, Construction Science and Management, Art, Performing Arts, English, Philosophy and Religion, Languages, and History. The cross-disciplinary nature of the College enriches all the programs and is exemplified by the interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Planning, Design and the Built Environment. The SoA faculty actively participate in the doctoral program in Planning, Design and the Built Environment, and are significant contributors to the research agenda of the university.
The SoA is home to over a third of the college’s Master students, and a quarter of the college’s undergraduates. The school is a complex of departments that are truly “an interconnected, multidisciplinary, geographically distributed community of teachers and learners in architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation, and urban design.” Clemson University (Carnegie Mellon VHR-R1 classification) a public university with a student population of around 24,000, is geographically situated in Clemson near the northwestern corner of South Carolina in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is within close proximity to Greenville, South Carolina and along the I-85 corridor halfway between Atlanta, Georgia to the south and Charlotte, North Carolina, to the north.
Qualifications
Candidates will have experience in academic leadership, including program stewardship and the support of faculty and students; excellent interpersonal communication skills; fiscal stewardship; and the ability to establish and maintain the confidence and respect of faculty, students, staff, alumni, and the professional community. They should demonstrate accomplishment through nationally and internationally recognized scholarship, and/or practice, with a record of distinguished teaching that merits appointment at the tenured rank of Full Professor.
Successful candidates must have a professional degree in architecture, landscape architecture, preservation or urban design and posses professional credentials for their discipline (such as professional registration or a license). Candidates having earned a Ph.D are desired, but not required.
