Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management

The Faculty for Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Crop Production (LTV) at SLU Alnarp is looking for a Head of Department for the Department of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management (LAPM).

The Department is Sweden’s main academic institution of education in the landscape professions, and for research related to this field as a part of SLU Landscape. The faculty also hosts the Swedish academia-praxis nexus Movium and – from 2017 onward – the internationally oriented research platform SLU Urban Futures. On campus an urban forest park of 30 hectares, the Alnarp Landscape Laboratory, invites for experimental on-site pedagogy and research. The Department works with teaching, research and collaboration and has about 80 employees. Education is a significant part of the institution’s activities and courses are given in five programs; Landscape Architecture, Landscape Engineering, Horticultural Design, Master of Landscape Architecture and Sustainable Urban Development. The Department has solid networks in the region’s academic environments, especially with the University of Copenhagen, Lund University and Malmö University. There are also established relationships with various actors of public development, such as governmental and regional authorities and municipalities, as well as with companies and NGOs. Researchers are part of major international networks and work with issues related to the planning, design and management of landscapes of all categories and scales, exposed to the global challenges such as urbanization, climate change, economic and demographic turbulences. All are regarded as important topics in society and are part of the SLU strategy.

Duties: With this appointment of HoD the Faculty expects strong leadership in developing the research and education at the department, and to contribute to the success of both Faculty and University within the framework of SLU Landscape. The HoD is responsible for the staff, for the economy and for the work environment in general, which means to develop an atmosphere of openness, respect, and good communication. The new HoD shall further develop the internal organization of the Department which includes leading the process of identifying future profiles of academic staff, in close dialogue with the Faculty. There will be several retirements coming the next few years, and the future staffing profiles shall mirror the needs in both education and research. The HoD will cooperate closely with practice and further develop cross-disciplinary outreach alliances across SLU, between SLU and its external cooperators, being it other universities, professional practices or end users, and is also expected to continue the development of improving the scientific output of both practical and applied research projects taking place at the department. The working languages are English and Swedish.

Qualifications: The Head of Department should hold a PhD in a relevant subject and must be recognized at an international level within at least one of the relevant research fields in LAPM. Applicants must be able to document successful experience in academic leadership at both department and individual level. We expect applicants to have substantial university leadership experience, or equivalent high-level experiences from leading organizations focusing on research, development or pedagogics. Experience from collaboration with practice is considered as an additional qualification. Applicants should document high-level experience in pedagogics, and is expected to lead the further development of the academically based educational activities at the department. Applicant must be fluent in English (spoken and written), and preferably be able to communicate in at least one of the Scandinavian languages, since Swedish is the main working language in university administration

Form of employment: Permanent position. The employment is a full time position with options for research and teaching. The position as HoD is appointed for three years with the possibility for extension.

The Faculty of Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Crop Production Science (LTV) is responsible for research, teaching, environmental monitoring and assessment as well as outreach and collaboration in the fields of landscape planning and horticulture. The LTV Faculty is also active in the fields of agriculture, food, production, health, quality of life, environment and water.

The majority of the faculty’s employees and students are based on Campus Alnarp, between Lund and Malmö. The LTV Faculty houses six departments and a large number of collaborative centres.
