Lecturer in Designing of Future Green Cities

For the location in Velp, Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences is looking for a:

(0.8 – 1.0 FTE)

Introduction

The future lies with the Green City. Cities face major challenges to provide their growing number of inhabitants with a healthy and future-proof living environment. Cities will therefore have to be designed in a smarter and more sustainable way and become “greener”. The development of a future-proof and healthy living environment requires a multitude of drastic, long-term changes.

The new applied research group is aimed at researching and shaping the transition to a future-proof city with good quality of life: a city that is green, healthy, nature inclusive, and climate adaptive. The required transition calls for integrated solutions, both for the existing cities and urban areas yet to be developed. Uncharted waters will be explored in search of innovative and perhaps unorthodox solutions. Design is an excellent research method for this.

The applied research group aligns with the tasks and challenges in the region. 18 municipalities in the Arnhem-Nijmegen region recently began a collaboration under the name Groene Metropool regio (green metropolitan region).

The position entails:

  • developing a cohesive research programme that guides the research and planning for the transition towards a future-proof city;
  • developing new knowledge, products, processes, and services leading to professional innovation, curriculum renewal, further research, publications, presentations, and strategic positioning;
  • leading a knowledge network to be formed, professionalising beginning lecturer-researchers, and supervising lecturer-researchers, PhD-students, and postdocs;
  • conducting practice-based research within frameworks set by the Code of Conduct for Scientific Integrity;
  • contributing to the connection between education and research and actively contributing to the quality of the content, the innovation (curriculum renewal), and the execution of education (e.g. by giving lectures and supervising graduates);
  • acquiring research assignments;
  • actively disseminating the results and insights from the research of the applied research groups to professional practice and society;
  • maintaining and expanding a relevant internal and external network in education, research, and professional practice;
  • collaborating beyond one’s own applied research group with other professors within and outside of Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences;
  • contributing to processes and systems for the assurance and enhancement of the quality of research and education;
  • a key role in the triangle of research, education, and professional practice.

The lecturer we are looking for:

  • excels in developing a cohesive research programme aimed at shaping the transition to a future-proof city with good quality of life: a city that is green, healthy, nature inclusive, and climate adaptive;
  • has experience in leading a research group in an inspiring way and in involving students in research;
  • has a PhD and an affinity — and preferably experience with — practical research;
  • is capable of acting as a leading figure within and outside the organisation;
  • has knowledge and vision about the current issues regarding the transitions related to making cities more sustainable;
  • has a network and excellent communication skills;
  • knows how to connect with people and disciplines and reach out and connect with society to create the required impact;
  • actively seeks collaboration with other applied research groups and study programmes at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences;
  • enjoys being visible in education, both to students and lecturers;
  • is able to motivate students to acquire knowledge and preferably has experience in developing and implementing teaching activities;
  • actively contributes to professionalising lecturers and lecturer-researchers by developing appropriate research competencies;
  • is demonstrably capable of acquiring external resources with their network;
  • focuses on results, is conscious of the environment, and contributes to a collegial atmosphere.

What we offer you:

  • a developing organisation in which collaboration, a focus on results, sustainability, and involvement are paramount;
  • flexibility to allow for a good work-life balance;
  • a temporary contract for the duration of 6 years (0.8 – 1.0 FTE); this may be considered for an extension in due time;
  • The salary depends on knowledge and experience and corresponds to salary scale 15 of the CAO-HBO (Hay job profile for Lecturer 2) and amounts to a minimum of €5,797.43 and a maximum of €7,485.19 gross per month for a full-time position;
  • 8% holiday allowance in May and 8.3% year-end bonus in December;
  • a pension with the Algemeen Burgerlijk Pensioenfonds (ABP).
