LECTURER/SNR LECTURER: LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

The School of Architecture Planning and Geomatics at the University of Cape Town is committed to advancing the project of Landscape Architecture to address the needs of socially just and inclusive cities in South Africa. The School is seeking to full-time appoint a landscape architect who is committed to the role that landscape architectural design and research offer in critically addressing colonial and apartheid injustices. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of engagement with, and commitment to, landscape architecture, design research and landscape architectural education within the global South.

For this particular position we are seeking candidates at Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level. Preference will be given to candidates with relevant teaching, practice, and research experience, as well as evidence of social responsiveness (http://www.uct.ac.za/main/explore-uct/social-responsiveness). The appointee will need to function in an interdisciplinary team in a collegial manner, and will be expected to initiate and conduct his/her own research, to produce peer reviewed outputs (journals, books, chapters etc.), and present at local and international conferences. Eligibility for registration with the South African Council for the Landscape Architectural Profession (SACLAP) will be favoured.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to course and curriculum development, and administrative duties associated with the post. The appointee will be expected to lead landscape architectural design studios, teach courses such as environmental and landscape planning, landscape construction, landscape sustainability, and history and theory of landscape architecture, and supervise dissertations at a masters level. If appointed at senior lecturer level, the successful applicant will be expected to lead and refine the vision of the Post-graduate Programmes in landscape architecture, and add new dimensions to the teaching of landscape architecture.

Minimum requirements for Lecturer level:
– a Masters’ degree (professional) or 4-year Bachelors’ degree in landscape architecture or equivalent;
– teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
Minimum requirements for Senior Lecturer Level:
– a Masters’ degree (professional) or 4-year Bachelors’ degree in landscape architecture or equivalent;
– registration for a PhD and evidence of progress towards such a qualification; a completed PhD is preferred;
– a record of recent independent and original contributions to research through peer reviewed publication
and / or awarded creative works;
– at least five years teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
