The Role We are seeking to appoint you as a Lecturer in Landscape Architecture. In your role as a Lecturer in Landscape Architecture you will contribute to the achievement of the research, teaching and engagement goals of the School. This appointment is made as part of a substantial investment in Landscape Architecture in Newcastle, including new studios and exhibition spaces, recently extended shared workshops, and a newly appointed lecturer and landscape research fellow. The investment involves the establishment of a new Master of Landscape Architecture (two years) to supplement our existing MA in Landscape Architecture Studies programme (one year). The MLA has candidate accreditation from the Landscape Institute, and we are working towards full accreditation in 2022. You will make key contributions to these programmes, assisting the Degree Programme Director in leadership and administration. Ideally you should have experience ranging across the field of landscape architecture, and a lively developing research profile in their own specialist area. We particularly welcome candidates who can contribute to teaching in design studio, and – ideally – one or more of the following areas: landscape sciences, planting design, landscape architecture theory, landscape design history and professional practice. Our appointee will assist with the development, administration, and delivery of taught programmes and modules. They will preferably be a member of the UK Landscape Institute and/or cognate professional organisations nationally or internationally. Numerous opportunities are possible for research collaboration across our vibrant interdisciplinary School and around the University with researchers working on international, national, and local projects. You will become a member of the Global Urban Research Unit (GURU) and/or Architecture Research Collaborative (ARC). They may also be affiliated to the McCord Centre for Landscape Research based in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology. The post will be based in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, one of the most successful and longest-established schools of its kind in the UK, ranked in the top 100 by QS in 2019, 4th in the field in the UK on Research Intensity and Research Power in REF2014, and approaching its centenary in 2022.

Key Accountabilities Specific responsibilities include:

• To engage in research in an area of their expertise, including seeking research funding

• To engage in teaching across the field of landscape architecture, especially design studio. We particularly welcome candidates who can also contribute to teaching in one or more of the following areas: landscape sciences, planting design, landscape architecture theory, landscape design history, and/or professional practice.

• To undertake administrative duties in relation to relevant taught programmes

• To undertake academic duties as required by the Head of School and subject Director

• To contribute to the development of cross-disciplinary teaching within the School

• To co-supervise research students

• To participate in initiatives to develop additional income streams through research funding or consultancy

• To serve on School, Faculty and University committees where appropriate The Person Knowledge, Skills and Experience Essential

• Conducting potentially leading research in the field, demonstrating international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance, and rigour.

• Refereed academic publications.

• Ability to independently identify research objectives and potential funding sources and prepare and write proposals for funding. High level of competence in oral, visual, and written communication.

• Experience in high quality relevant teaching, enthusiastic, reflective and creative pedagogue; experience in student experience and wellbeing issues; engagement with curriculum development and pedagogical innovation; willingness to participate in international field trips. Desirable

• Experience in, or potential for, extending research impact by developing research-based solutions to real-world problems, and engaging with external stakeholders Attributes and Behaviour Essential

• A conscientious teacher who develops good relationships with students, willing to understand the needs of, and to empathise with, international students.

• Track record in working as a good colleague and academic citizen, willing and able to work collaboratively, including across disciplines and with external partners. Desirable

• Collaborative, team-working and organisational skills in both research and the development of new and existing programmes, and pedagogy. Qualifications Essential

• Excellent degree and postgraduate qualifications in an area or areas cognate with landscape architecture. Desirable

• Completion of a PhD in a relevant area.

• Membership of the Landscape Institute or a cognate international or national profession, or eligibility for professional accreditation

• Membership of HEA and/or a recognised HE teaching qualification.
