NEW RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR PLANNING AND DESIGN OF BLUE SPACES FOR HUMAN HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

The EU-funded project BlueHealth came to an end in December 2020. This focused on the potential of blue spaces to increase human health and well-being and to prevent disease. More information on the project as a whole can be found here: https://bluehealth2020.eu/
A significant part of the project revolved around the planning and design of urban blue spaces. This strand of work was led by Professor Simon Bell at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. Part of the work involved the development of a toolbox for planners and designers comprising a set of instruments specially focusing on blue spaces. Further work included a critical review of urban landscape design projects which have been successful in reconnecting people with water, increasing accessibility and reviving run-down spaces. A website has been created where anyone can obtain access to use the tools – the BlueHealth Environmental Assessment Tool (BEAT) and the BlueHealth Behaviour Assessment Tool (BBAT, and also where you can find the database of projects which were selected for review – presented as BlueProfiles (this part of the site is still growing and will eventually feature 180 projects). There is also a blog where interesting blue themes are discussed. The website can be found here: https://bluehealth.tools/
