The position

At The Academy of Fine Arts, UiT The Arctic University of Norway two permanent positions as Professor/Associate Professor in landscape architecture are now available. One position from 01.08.2021 and one in 2022 with a flexible starting date. The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. The tasks assigned to the position require a full presence at the workplace during work hours.You must be able to start in the position within 6 months after receiving the offer.

In August 2018 The Academy of Fine Arts enrolled the first students on a new joint five-year master’s degree programme in landscape architecture. The programme is a collaboration between UiT and The Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO). This Masters programme aims to combine the best traditions from within landscape architecture education and practice with innovative studies focusing on the changing landscapes in the High North. The available positions will be affiliated with The Academy of Arts at UiT in Tromsø, which have programmes in art, creative writing and landscape architecture. Appointees are also expected to work closely together with The Institute of Landscape and Urbanism at AHO.

The position’s field of research or work

The candidates we are seeking will be part of a professionally strong team who:

  • Educate versatile landscapes architects of high international standard with strong design skills, creative and well equipped to navigate landscapes and societies in constant transformation.
  • Perform project- and research-based teaching within the focus areas of the programme.
  • Contribute to the knowledge production within the profession with special emphasis on the sustainable development of landscapes and societies within an arctic/sub-arctic context.

Teaching and supervision:

Appointees will be responsible for teaching and supervising students on the 4th and 5th year of the programme (master level) including studio-based teaching and supervision of diploma students. Supervision of research fellows (PhD and Postdoc) might also be included. 

Research:

Appointees must hold a high professional international standard in relevant research capabilities, including practice/design-related research. Appointees are expected to contribute professionally through active collaborations with colleagues also cross-disciplinary, and involve students in research activities. Up to a maximum of 50% of the positions are supposed to be dedicated research.  

Administrative tasks:

The positions include programme and department related administrative tasks, including tasks related to fulfilling strategic objectives formulated by the department and UiT as a whole.

Qualifications

The joint master’s degree programme is a work in progress. It requires highly motivated faculty members, members who have a talent for and experience with programme design and outreach related activities. We are looking for merited and capable landscape architects with interests in and/or experience with arctic/sub-arctic landscapes, and who can document research addressing how natural and anthropogenic changes affects societies and ecosystems.

The candidates we are seeking must be able to document:

  • A professional degree in landscape architecture or equivalent.
  • Experience from research of high international standard, including practice/design-related research, and project management. 
  • Experience from teaching on a master’s degree level in landscape architecture or equivalent.
  • Good communication- and interpersonal skills.
  • A substantial professional network internationally. 

Language skills – Applicants must command one of the Scandinavian languages and have good skills in English both verbally and in writing. Non-Scandinavian applicants are required to command Norwegian equivalent to a minimum level B2/C1 within two years after being appointed. 

Emphasis will be on your potential for research, motivation and personal suitability for the position. The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole. You need to state in the application whether you want to be assessed for position as Professor or Associate Professor.

Qualification requirements for the position as Professor:

  • Academic level conforming to established international or national standards for position of Professor in the subject area concerned
  • Documented pedagogical competence

In addition you must document:

  • Development of the quality of one’s own teaching and supervision over time, and
  • Broad supervision experience, preferably at master’s/PhD level, and
  • Participation in the development of educational quality in academic communities

To be awarded a professorship, you must document substantially more extensive research of high quality than that required to be awarded a doctorate degree. You must document academic activity at a high level over the previous six years, and that this points forwards towards continued activity at professorial level.

Qualification requirements for the position as førsteamanuensis (Associate Professor):

  • Norwegian doctoral degree in subject area concerned or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree, or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality
  • Documented pedagogical competence

At UiT we put emphasis on the quality, relevance and significance of the research work and not on where the work is published, in accordance with the principles of The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).

Pedagogical competence (basic pedagogical competence)

All applicants for teaching and research positions shall document their pedagogical competence. You must have aquired basic competence for teaching and supervision at higher education level, this include basic skills in planning, conducting, evaluating and developing teaching and guidance. The pedagogical competence can be achieved in one of the following ways:

a) Completed education or courses designed to provide teaching competence for teaching at universities and colleges, equivalent to a minimum of 200 hours

b) Practice as a teacher and supervisor in higher education is required, often combined with relevant courses and seminars. Experience with teaching and supervision in higher education corresponding to two years in a full-time position is required. For professor positions, experience with teaching and supervision in higher education corresponding to three years in a full-time position of is required.

For professor positions, the teaching competence can be developed and documented through a combination of courses and teaching portfolio.The supplementary criteria for a professorial basic pedagogical competence must be met.

Those who do not satisfy the requirements may be appointed on a permanent basis on the condition that they satisfy the requirements within two years of appointment. UiT offers courses in educational competence to employees.

Interim appointment with qualification conditions

If there are no fully qualified applicants for the position, an interim appointment to qualify scientifically, may be made for a period of three years. Application for permanent employment with a new assessment shall be applied for within the three year-period. The appointment will become permanent if you are found to be suitably qualified before the three-year period elapses.

  • Teaching portfolio with up to 5 examples from relevant courses stating the role of the applicant in each course
  • Documented pedagogical competence:
    • Applicants who have completed education or courses designed to provide teaching competence for teaching at universities and colleges, equivalent to a minimum of 200 hours, must attach diploma and curriculum for the completed course.
    • Other applicants shall describe, assess and document their competence as a teacher and supervisor.The skills must be documented in the form of a teaching portfolio.
    • Applicants for professor positions shall also document that the supplementary criteria are satisfied:
      • Description of and reflection over your work involving development of your teaching and supervision. This should be documented with specific examples that demonstrate development over time, as well as a description of and reflection over the process and result
      • Description of experience with supervision at master’s and PhD level. In addition to describing the scope of the supervision, you shall also summarize your supervision experience and point to possible development areas
      • Description of and reflection over your own leadership, participation and role in development of the educational quality in the academic community

Assessment

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee’s mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants’ qualifications on the basis of the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed requirements presented in this call. All necessary information and material for the assessment must be submitted before the application deadline.  Material that are not submitted as part of the application will not be assessed by the committee.

Those applicants who are assessed as best qualified will be called to an interview. The interview aims to clarify the applicants’ motivations for the job and personal suitability. A trial lecture may also be held.

The remuneration for Professor is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1013. The remuneration for Associate Professor is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1011. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.

The allocation of working hours is flexible and allocated on a case-by-case basis. In general, professors/associate professors will spend an equal amount of time on teaching and research and development work, when time spent on other duties is deducted. As a norm, the time resources spent on administrative duties constitutes 5 % for academic staff.
