The Department of Landscape Architecture in the University of Pennsylvania School of Design (PennDesign) is seeking applicants for a full-time position as an Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning in July 2019.
This position requires the ability to teach courses in landscape architectural theory and history with an emphasis on how these subjects translate into contemporary design culture. The Department is especially interested in candidates who demonstrate substantive engagement with theories and histories of ecology, urbanism, infrastructure and/or aesthetics in both their research and teaching. Candidates with qualifications and interest in teaching in design studios as well as theory and history subjects are of particular interest.
Theory and history teaching in the Department of Landscape Architecture will take the form of required lecture courses in the MLA program, and elective seminars open to the entire School of Design. There are also opportunities to train students at the PhD level. In addition to demonstrating effectiveness in teaching, successful applicants must also demonstrate a strong capacity for the production of scholarly work through a record of past publications and plans for future research.
This is a full-time appointment with responsibilities for teaching, research and administration. An appointment at either the Assistant or Associate Professor level is anticipated. The specific rank (assistant or associate professor, with or without tenure) of the successful candidate will be determined based on experience and qualifications. Minimum qualifications include a professionally accredited Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture or Architecture, or an accredited MA/MFA in a relevant subject. A PhD is preferred, but not required. Applicants from outside the landscape architecture discipline are encouraged to apply.
Applicants should submit a one-page letter of interest that describes their overall research agenda and how they see their work fitting within the Department of Landscape Architecture at PennDesign. Applicants should also submit a personal statement describing their near- and long-term plans for research and scholarship; their teaching philosophy; and their teaching experience. In addition, applicants should provide a current CV; three writing samples (published or unpublished); examples of course syllabi (no more than three); the names and contact information for three references who will be contacted at a later date; and, if available, a portfolio of design work—either the candidate’s own work or work produced under the supervision of the candidate.
