University of Sheffield – Lecturer in Planting Design

The Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield has an international reputation and track record of excellence in research, innovation, and education in the planning, design and management of urban vegetation, plants and plant communities. Our academics have led on the design and implementation of planting schemes as part of prestigious local, national and international projects, including the Grey to Green project in Sheffield, the 2012 London Olympics, the Barbican development in London and the Shanghai Expo site in China, as well as working closely with local social enterprises, and key national horticultural and heritage organisations such as the Royal Horticultural Society and the National Trust. We are looking to build on this foundation by recruiting a Lecturer in Planting Design, who will be committed to bringing their own vision to complement and diversify our work in sustainable and ecological horticulture and planting design, within an overall landscape architectural context.

You will have experience of planting design and relevant specialist areas, derived from practice, education and research, ideally with contacts in the public, private and third sector. You will be knowledgeable about plant selection and horticultural techniques applicable in different landscape contexts, and at different scales, in both urban and rural contexts. You will understand how planting design fits into broader landscape architectural practice, and how a planting scheme is delivered from conceptualisation to implementation and maintenance. You’ll be passionate about plants and have the ability to communicate your knowledge, skills and enthusiasm to students, colleagues and broader audiences inside and outside the academy. You will see vegetation, plants and plant communities as one of the main elements in structuring landscape space, and have an understanding of how plants can be integrated with other landscape elements and materials to create an integrated approach to a landscape project.

We are seeking applicants with a PhD or equivalent experience in Landscape Architecture, Horticulture or Ecology, with experience in the design and implementation of innovative, climate-change adapted and sustainable planting schemes in public settings, and the curiosity and drive to develop evidence based planting design theory and practice through funded research. We’re one of the best not-for-profit organisations to work for in the UK. The University’s Total Reward Package includes a competitive salary, a generous Pension Scheme and annual leave entitlement, as well as access to a range of learning and development courses to support your personal and professional development.

We build teams of people from different heritages and lifestyles whose talent and contributions complement each other to greatest effect. We believe diversity in all its forms delivers greater impact through research, teaching and student experience.
